Paternity and relationship DNA testing can be used to tell whether there is a genetic relationship between individuals. As such it can be used to:

  • Determine a child’s parent(s)
  • Find out whether twins are identical or non-identical
  • Find out if people are related as siblings
  • Find out if your son is the father of your grandchild (grandparent testing)
  • Determine paternity of an unborn baby (prenatal)

The point of a DNA parentage test is to find out who the biological parent of the child is. The most common parentage test is the paternity test, which is normally taken by men looking to establish whether they are a child’s father.

For paternity and relationship testing of any kind, the most accurate result possible is always obtained when we have samples from all parties in the biological relationship. In the case of a paternity test, this would mean a sample from the mother, the alleged father and the child. It is also possible to conduct a paternity test using samples from the alleged father and child only.

Testing both parents will provide a more accurate result. The mother’s sample provides more genetic information for the case and with that information we can more accurately determine the father’s genetic contribution. We can still perform testing without the mother, however the paternity index will be lower, but this won’t change the overall outcome of the test (included or excluded father).

We’ll normally ask you for:

  • The biological relationship you are trying to establish, i.e. “Am I the father?”.
  • The name, age and sex of each person giving a sample.
  • The availability for testing of the family members.
  • Contact details on a completed application form.

In really complex cases we may ask for a few more details, or for additional family members to provide a sample.

All information and DNA test results are strictly confidential. Reports will only be issued to the person who signed the sample application form and their authorized representatives.

In most cases mouth swabs are the preferred sample type as they are easy and painless to collect. However we can use other biological samples such as blood, hair and tissue if needed.

Once we receive the samples, we extract DNA from the swab (or other sample type) in our laboratory and compare the DNA profiles of the people involved.

For most tests we guarantee you will receive an emailed report in less than 10 working days from when all samples are received at the laboratory. You can ask us about the turnaround time for a specific test when you talk to us or contact us by email at any time.

If the genetic profile between the alleged father and the child does not match, then it is 100% certain that the alleged father is not the biological father. If the profiles match, there will be at least 99.9% certainty that the alleged father is the biological father.

Yes, for non-legal testing you can collect your own sample and we’ll happily send you a home collection kit, which allows you to take your own samples in the comfort of your own home. When results are requested through legal institutions for court hearings or other legal proceedings such as government agency reports, these samples must be collected by an independent person that we can organise for you.

No, however we need the application form must be signed by a legal guardian of the child if the child is under 18 years of age. Paternity tests can be performed with samples from the father and child only.

Yes, we can send them to addresses as instructed by all parties to be tested.

We prefer you send your sample to us as soon as possible after collection. You can store the sample in your refrigerator (not freezer) for a few weeks if you cannot send it straight away, however we cannot guarantee sufficient DNA will remain on the swabs after a length of time.
