Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing can help you get on the right medication at the right dose, the first time.

Your genetic make up (your DNA) provides a crucial role in how your body responds to medication.
Pharmacogenomic (PGx) DNA testing empowers you and your healthcare provider to have a tailored treatment plan for maximum effectiveness.

How Does Pharmacogenomics (PGx) work?

Medication can be a powerful tool to manage health conditions. Everyone processes (metabolises) medications at different rates. While the general dosage, suggested by medication manufacturers, is designed to minimise side-effects, it may not suit your personal requirements.

If a group of patients are given the same medication at the same dose, they will react in four different ways:

  • They drug will work but will cause side effects
  • The drug won’t work and will also cause side effects
  • The drug won’t work but there will be no side effects
  • The drug will work and there will be no side effects

Depending on your unique genetic makeup, you may process a medication:

  • Faster than normal, which may cause the medication to not provide the desired symptom relief
  • Slower than normal, which may increase the risk of side-effects

Adjusting your medication and dosage can alleviate symptoms and mitigate side effects.

If this performed through a trial-and-error approach, this can:

  • be time-consuming
  • be financially taxing
  • increase the possibility of an adverse drug reaction
  • have significant social impact on families

PGx testing provides personalised information about how you react to medications, which equips you and your healthcare provider with valuable insights to craft at a tailored treatment plan swiftly.

Benefits of PGx testing:

  • Avoid ineffective medications
  • Improved treatement outcomes
  • Minimise the risk of medication side effects
  • Optimised drug selection and dosing
  • Reduce the likelihood of long term impacts on your health and wellness
  • Slash the  time and money spent on trial-and error medications
  • Get you on fast track to finding the right drug, at the right does, the first time

When Should I have a PGx test done?

  • If you are about to start on an antidepressant for the first time
  • If you have been on medications in the past and found them not to work
  •  If  you have experienced significant side effects from your medication previously
  • Requiring doses of specific medications outside the recommended range

The PGx Mental Health Panel

To ensure PGx is providing relevant information to you, we offer specialised test panels.

The PGx Mental Health focus panel tests genes that are crucial in metabolising medications for mental health conditions.

  • Reporting on over 80% of mental health medications on the market in Australia
  • These include antidepressant, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, ADHD agents, & benzodiazepines
  • Specific recommendations based on international guidelines on what your genetic profile indicates about the best medications for you, and at what dose

The PGx Multi Panel

Our PGx Multi Panel combines the mental health panel and the pain panel and gives you information on additional medications, such as statins for cardiology, proton pump inhibitors for gastroenterology, addiction medicine and others.

You may not need these now, but as your DNA doesn’t change, your results will have lifetime relevance.

The PGx Pain Panel

The PGx Pain focus panel tests genes that impact the metabolism of opioid pain medications, such as codeine and morphine, along with Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory medications (NSAIDs).

It enables better pain management by being able to identify individual differences in the perception of pain and susceptibility and sensitivity  to relevant drugs.

1 in 5 Australians suffer from persistent pain, making their risk of depression 4 x higher than those without pain.

Pharmacogenomics FAQ

Efficacy of medication is not solely dependent on your DNA. Other factors will impact whether a medication is effective or not and at what dose, including general health, environmental factors, or other medications.

Your DNA test results are like a permanent record of your genetic makeup. They won’t change over time. This means even if you don’t need medication now, these results can be valuable in the futureIf you’re considering taking a new medication in future, you can revisit these results with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action.

We will send your doctor your report in about 2 weeks from the date of sample collection. Please ask them to share a copy of the report with you.
